Building Design Systems with Purpose: Meet Jesús, UX Lead Designer at CatalystOne
“Small improvements in the system can unlock big impact for everyone using it. That’s what makes this work so meaningful.”

🚴 From Morning Rides to Meaningful Work
For Jesús González Torres, the workday starts before he even reaches his desk.
“I cycle 14 km to the office most mornings — it’s the perfect way to clear my head before work. After a quick shower, I feel refreshed and ready for the day.”
As the Design System Lead Designer at CatalystOne, Jesús works in a hybrid setup: three days in the office, two from home. His role sits at the intersection of product, design, and engineering, with teams spanning Norway and India.
“Since we’ve met in person, our meetings feel easy and natural, almost like we’re sitting together in the same room.”
💻 Designing Better Systems, One Token at a Time
Jesús spends most of his time in Figma, working on design tokens, components, and documentation that lay the groundwork for everything the product teams create.
“It might sound very detailed, but that foundation helps teams move faster and create better experiences. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how system-level changes can make a big difference.”
His role is not just about polishing pixels; it’s about scaling design across the organisation.
“It’s the mix of people and problems that makes it exciting. I collaborate with colleagues in different locations and learn from their perspectives.”
🧭 Why He Joined and Why He’s Staying
After years working as a consultant, Jesús was ready for a change.
“I wanted more stability and the chance to take real ownership of my work. I also wanted to build products that truly work with and for people, and CatalystOne is a great example of that. That’s what brought me here, and it’s also what’s making me stay.”
✨ A Design System “Eureka” Moment
One of Jesús’ proudest moments so far came during a critical time of rebranding for CatalystOne.
“When it comes to design systems, what works for others doesn’t always work for everyone. We had several sparring sessions to find the right approach for us.”
Eventually, the team landed on a new design token structure and everything just clicked. 🔐
“It was a true Eureka moment. And the best part is, after implementing it, everything has worked like a charm.”
🤝 A Team That Sparks Growth
Regular sparring sessions and open collaboration are key parts of how the design team operates.
“I get consistent feedback and suggestions from my colleagues. It helps me learn, improve, and come up with better solutions.”
His advice for anyone considering joining?
“Go for it. You’ll find a team that’s supportive, curious, and not afraid to experiment. We share knowledge, spar on ideas, and have fun while solving real challenges.”
🎮 Life Beyond figma
Outside of work, Jesús keeps a healthy balance between creativity, family, and staying active.
“I spend a lot of time with my son; we draw together and even 3D-print small objects we come up with.”
He also plays guitar, tests out new tech like VR and AI tools, and indulges in retro video games from his childhood. And when it’s time to really unplug?
“I head outdoors, cycling, kitesurfing, or snowboarding are my favourite ways to recharge.” 🔋
